The Steuben County Literacy Coalition and Cahoots Coffee Café are forming Links, a cooperative mentoring parternship for students in grades 1-12 throughout Steuben County. The program will serve grades 1 through 5 who are part of the Full Speed Ahead program under the Literacy Coalition. Full Speed Ahead is an after-school program at Fremont, Prairie Heights, Hamilton, Hendry Park and Carlin Park elementary schools. Additionally, Links will also serve children and young adults ages 10-18 at Cahoots Coffee Café. The goal of the program is to facilitate healthy relationships between adults and teens. “This is something we have wanted for our kids at Cahoots and we are excited that it is finally going to be a reality” says Co-Directors Norma Baker and Lauralee MacLeod.
The mentors for Links will be trained and paired with their mentee in late September with materials provided by the Indiana Mentoring Partnership. The training sessions will take place at Cahoots Coffee Café and will be under the direction of December Warren, Project Director for the Indiana Mentoring Partnership. Additionally, on August 22nd, Cahoots will host a “Mentor Mixer” in which individuals who are interested in being mentors can learn more about the program. The event will feature refreshments and an informal discussion of the program.
Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or the equivalency, obtain a background check and spend at least one hour with their mentee per week. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact the Literacy Coalition at 665-1414 by August 20th or visit www.steubenliteracy.org.
